The Real Fort

Logan's Fort, also called St. Asaph's, was a stockaded settlement raised by Benjamin Logan in central Kentucky, near present-day Stanford. In 1777, during the Revolutionary War, Kentucky's handful of forts (Boonesborough, Harrodsburg and Logan's) came under repeated attack, and Logan's Fort was besieged that spring.

Why It Matters

Kentucky was then a remote county of Virginia with only a few hundred settlers. Holding these three stations decided whether American settlement west of the mountains would survive the war. The novel takes that real siege and asks what else might have been waiting outside the walls.
